A NEW CATEGORY – POEM BY POEM
More than a year ago, I published a This ‘n That piece about a new category called The Poet’s Corner. It was my humble effort to prove, or at least to suggest, that poetry doesn’t have to be avoided. I’d thought long and hard about it and then remembered the advice given to Ann Lamott’s kid brother by her father (contained in her book Bird by Bird). Poetry isn’t so hard, I thought, not if you read it poem by poem. Now, more than a year later, I’ve changed the name to simply Poem by Poem. And with this change, you will have the chance to buy the book containing the chosen poem. Well, you can buy it if the book is still in print. You may have to scour used book stores or library book sales.
Most of my books come from library sales, college bookstores, and indie bookstores, new and used. I collect my favorite poets and many poets I’d never heard of before buying their books. Used poetry books are cheap enough that even one or two good poems per book make the purchase worthwhile.
So, here we are at today’s Poem by Poem. I will offer you one poem, name the book it came from, and a few thoughts on the poem and why I picked it. So, if you should find yourself browsing at Bookin’ with Sunny, click on Poem by Poem (in This ‘n That) and take a look to see what I’ve picked. If you have any thoughts about the poem, I’d love to hear from you. And should you think of a particular poem that you especially like, please let me know. I would be glad to share it with our readers. – Sunny Solomon
