Hi gang – just wanted you to know that I did email Ellen Feldman with the question about her ending and, because I vaguely remembered somebody saying because Babe was the female character with the greatest strength, she didn’t believe that Babe could not have avoided the rape scene at the train station, I asked a friend who had also read the book if she thought that, too. Aha! She remembered the scene very well and reminded me that Babe did, in fact, snatch the suitcase and fled to the public restroom. She remained in the restroom for such a long time that she had every reasonable expectation that the soldier would be gone by the time she finally opened the door. I think Feldman covered her bases on that one.
